HUDs aren’t a common thing in RPG Maker games, but they can add a useful bit of info for players. Finding decent HUD graphics can sometimes be tough though, so this week let’s check out SmashArtist’s works, which includes all sorts of HUD elements along with a variety of other neat resources.
SmashArtist’s HUD resource thread focuses on pixel art to create great looking HUDs. It’s nice to know just how much water you’ve got left in your bucket when watering crops, or when the party’s energy level is low and they need to rest without needing to go into the menu, so why not have a HUD that shows you what you need to know all while being nice to look at? SmashArtist has made a variety of bars to suit all sorts of HUD needs.
If your game features a hunger system, you could use loafs of bread or pieces of candy to show how full the player is instead of just a number or plain bar. And if watering plants is a big part of the game, then glasses of water, droplets, or even a big bucket could work to show the player when they need to head to the nearest well.
SmashArtist knows that sometimes your game just needs another way to show HP or MP, so they’ve made sure to include a number of gauges that’ll work for those such as hearts, sci-fi-inspired triangles, and just some simple and clean bars.
Their thread also includes multiple colors for most of the gauges, so it’s easy to use the same style of gauge for all of your HUD elements.
But HUD elements aren’t the only thing SmashArtist has shared with us! Their MV Resource thread is a treasure trove of all sorts of neat graphics. From side view weapons to facesets and even a gorgeous art deco titles2 frame, this thread shows just how diverse SmashArtist’s skills are.
Have you been wanting to include a snowy owl in your game, but had been holding off because there wasn’t a good face for it? SmashArtist is here to fix that problem! Other facesets include an adorable pink slime and full emotion set for MV’s cat, so if you’ve been wanting to include some new non-human characters to your game they can finally have fitting faces.
Every ninja in a game needs suitable equipment, so make sure to grab the Japanese weapons for your sideview battles. Steely kunai, katanas, sai, and even kama make for great additions to battles, and with matching MV-style icons it’s easy to set up the perfect database entry for them!
If you’ve been wanting some unusual elemental dragons for your heroes to talk to (or fight), SmashArtist has you covered! They’ve made some big dragon sprites that don’t all fall into the stereotypical dragon look, meaning you can really make each meeting feel different instead of just having the same dragon recolored over and over.
And if your game has a need for a gross, gooey foe, SmashArtist’s flesh slime could fit the bill! Fill your creepy dungeons with these misshapen (but still somehow cute) horrors and have your players ready to run for the nearest exit.
So if you’ve been looking for some awesome HUD graphics or some other incredible additions to make your game look even more like how you’ve always imagined, make sure to check out SmashArtist’s HUD Art Assets and MV Art Resources threads!
