This week’s spotlight is focusing on someone who worked on resources back in the XP and Ace days and recently returned: Wecoc. Deciding that MZ’s tiles could use some love, Wecoc has taken the time to give us some great tile options!

Wecoc’s MZ Resources aren’t set up in the standard tileset layout, but don’t let that discourage you! With a bit of editing on your part you can add some awesome details to your maps.

MZ’s default dungeon tiles work fine, but they can be a bit too bright or cheery for certain games. So Wecoc took the tiles for places like the grass, ice and fire dungeons and edited and replaced them to turn these:

Into these:

New additions to the ground tiles give us more options for mapping, and some of Wecoc’s changes just make sense when it comes to players exploring the areas, like turning the fully lava floor to solid rock that is safer to walk on. He’s also made more piles of treasure to lure players into exploring dangerous caves, as well as editing some of the sets to create reptile inspired and darker inner body tiles to create creepy new dungeons.

Dungeons aren’t the only tiles Wecoc has touched though, he’s also worked on some new exterior tiles too! Roof and wall recolors can make it easier to keep a town’s appearance similar without having every building look exactly the same, and some new stone path tiles can make your village roads look better than ever. His market stalls decorated with food and drinks can turn a simple town square into a lively place to shop, and some new bushes can give a park a more maintained look.

He’s also made some great edits to interior tiles! Stock your game’s bars with a selection of bottles, some still in crates, and give your patrons fancy goblets to drink from. If tea is more your speed, then a selection of filled and empty teacups are perfect additions to tables. Kitchens could make use of hanging sausages and garlic separated from each other, or use empty crates and wooden mannequins to tell your players that the shop is out of stock without even having to speak to the shopkeeper.

If you like to make your players camp in all sorts of locations, Wecoc’s tent edits could be a great addition. Have the tents coated in snow when camping in the mountains or partly buried in sand when lost in a desert.

And if all those tiles weren’t enough, Wecoc tackled some of the world tiles too! He adjusted the palettes of the mountain tiles so that they all match and work well together, as well as edited some of them so that you can make smaller mountain ranges as needed. After looking at the tree tiles and deciding that they were too uniform, he switched up sizes and types to offer up some more wild forest options. Other smaller additions like half-sunken ships and bones meant for the poisonous swamp tiles can help add even more personality to your maps.

This spotlight only looked at a few of his tile additions, so if you want to see all his amazing tiles go check out his resource thread!
